The Alchemist’s Debt has reached v0.21, and developer Hierophant is using the update to tackle a problem that’s plagued the game since launch: file size. The build introduces engine-level optimization work carried out after the original v0.1 release, and the payoff is a install size reduction of roughly 4x compared to the previous release — a huge quality-of-life win for players who’ve been sitting on multi-gigabyte downloads for a 2DCG title.
That kind of compression pass usually means re-encoded art assets and trimmed redundant data rather than new engine tech, but the practical effect is the same: faster downloads, less storage pressure, and smoother updates going forward as the game continues to grow. For a Patreon-funded project still building out its content, keeping the download lean matters as much as adding new scenes.
The game itself follows a male protagonist navigating a fantasy setting steeped in magic and quiet obligation, told through 2DCG art with an AI-assisted CG pipeline. Themes so far lean into slow-burn teasing and voyeuristic tension rather than explicit action, with oral content unlocked as relationships progress.
Version 0.21 is available now for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android. With the file size problem addressed, Hierophant’s focus can shift back to expanding the story for the next build.
